Architect, of Dublin. George Luke O'Connor is probably the person of the same name who was born in Dublin on 26 April 1870 to John O'Connor and Teresa Mary (née Mcquade).(1)  He was articled to WILLIAM KAYE-PARRY  WILLIAM KAYE-PARRY and then entered the office of JOHN LOFTUS ROBINSON JOHN LOFTUS ROBINSON . He was still very young when Robinson caught  typhoid and died in October 1894,(2) leaving him to carry on the practice. Throughout his career his commissions were many and varied, including Catholic churches, various buildings for the Sisters of Mercy and the Christian Brothers, hospitals, libraries, commercial premises, cinemas, public and private housing. In 1911 he was appointed architect for a scheme of some 600 houses at various locations in the Pembroke district of Dublin(3) and for further housing in the same district in 1919.(4) He was associated with the original Greater Dublin town planning scheme and was architect and director of the Dublin Civic Exhibition, which was held in the former Linenhall Barracks in Lisburn Street in 1914. He also played his part in the activities of the profession: he was elected a member of the RIAI in 1895(5) and in 1897 became one of the foundation members of the reconstituted AAI, of which he was president for the session 1911-12.(6) He was one of the Irish architects who attended the Congress of Architects in London in the summer of 1906.(7) He showed several architectural designs at the Royal Hibernian Academy's summer exhibitions between 1896 and 1908 and again in 1936 and 1937.(8)

O'Connor conducted his extensive practice on his own until about 1938, when he took his assistant JOHN JAMES AYLWARD  JOHN JAMES AYLWARD into partnership, practising as O'CONNOR & CONNOR & amp; AYLWARD. AYLWARD. (9) He died in June 1947 after a brief illness, after which Aylward carried on the practice under the same name. Remembered as a kind and unassuming man with a keen sense of humour, he played an active part in public life as a board member of several hospitals and institutions and found his relaxation on the golf course and at race meetings. He had married a wife named Martha Mary in 1900,(10) but his census return for 1911 records no children of the marriage.
