Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer, of Wexford town. Edward O'Brien obtained the BE degree from the Royal University of Ireland in 1885 and then spent a year as an assistant to JOSEPH BERRY JOSEPH BERRY , township surveyor of Kingstown, Co. Dublin. During the next two years he worked first fo WILLIAM LEWIS  WILLIAM LEWIS on the Kilmore and Ballyteigue drainage and then for JOHN HENRY RYAN  JOHN HENRY RYAN on contract drawings for the Galway and Clifden Railway. From 1888 to 1891 he was chief draughtsman and assitant engineer to the Royal Commission on Public Works. He then worked again, briefly for William Lewis. In 1892 he was appointed assistant to EDWARD KIERAN RYAN EDWARD KIERAN RYAN , harbour engineer and borough surveyor for the town of Wexford. After Ryan's death in 1894, his two functions were divided: O'Brien was appointed harbour engineer in 1896 and D.E. MCCARTHY  MCCARTHY was appointed borough surveyor. O'Brien also practised privately in Wexford. His name continues to appear in the lists of members of the Insitution of Civil Engineers of Ireland until 1924 though without an address from 1917 onwards.
