Civil engineer, of Ballina, Co. Mayo.   According to the 1911 census, Martin James O'Boyle, a son of Patrick O'Boyle, dock labourer, and his wife, Catherine, was born in Co. Mayo in 1879 or 1880.  In 1907 he was appointed engineer under the Labourers' Cottages Act by the district councils of both Ballina and Swinford, Co. Mayo. The Local Government Board refused to sanction either appointment but eventually gave way on the Ballina post after they had examined O'Boyle.(1) In the case of Swinford, a Mr Taylor of Aclare, Co. Sligo, was appointed instead.(2) In 1912 O'Boyle was appointed an assistant county surveyor for Co. Mayo,(3) a position which he held until 1942 or later.(4)   He was unmarried at the time of the 1911 census and living with his parents at Ardnaree, Ballina.
