NUGENT, SAMUEL WILLIAM

Chief engineer to the Dublin Urban Tramway Company. Samuel Nugent, a son of the Rev. - Nugent,(1) was born circa 1839. He was a pupil of SAMUEL USSHER ROBERTS when he enrolled at the Engineering School of Queen's College, Galway. After graduating he worked for the Indian civil service. and, while doing so, obtained the Diploma of the Thomason Civil Engineering College at Ruorkee in the Punjab. In 1874 he joined the staff of the Dublin Urban Tramway Company. He became the company's chief engineer, holding the post during the period which saw the transition from horse-drawn to electric trams and the vast enlargement of the network. He died after a long illness in February 1902 at the age of sixty-three and was buried in Mount Jerome cemetery. He was a keen yachtsman and a member of the committee of the Royal Irish Yacht Club. He was also well-known as a rifle shot. The Samuel William Nugent who received the BAI degree from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1889 was probably his son.
