Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Scottish-born surveyor and engineer. Alexander Nimmo, eldest of the three sons of John Nimmo, a watchmaker-cum-hardware merchant, was born in Kirkaldy, Fife, in 1783.   After a distinguished student career at St Andrew's and Edinburgh universities, he became a schoolmaster and in 1805 at the age of twenty-two was appointed rector of Inverness Academy.  While he was in this post, he made surveys for the parliamentary commission for establishing the boundaries of the Scottish countiesand contributed articles on scientific and engineering topics to the Edinburgh Encyclopaedia. His connection with Ireland began in In January 1811 when he was appointed one of the engineers to the Irish Bogs Commission, established in 1809  'to enquire into the nature and extent of the several bogs in Ireland and the practicability of draining and cultivating them'. In June 1811 he resigned from Inverness Academy in June 1811 and immediately went to Ireland, where he prepared reports first on Co. Kerry and then on Co. Galway.  His work for the Bogs Commissioners ended with the publication of his report on Connemara in April 1814 and in June he set off on a three-month continental tour to look at public works in France, Germany and Holland.

Even before he left on his continental tour, Nimmo had submitted his first plans for a new packet ship harbour at Dunmore East, Co. Waterford, a major project which was substantially completed in 1822.   In 1815 he published a report on the port and harbour of Cork and in the same year he prepared plans for a road from Dublin to Ballina, with alternative routes from Boyle to Ballina via Foxford and via Tobercurry.(1) When a first, abortive attempt was made to establish a sytem of county surveyorships in Ireland in 1817, Nimmo accepted the Government's invititation to become a member of the examining panel but was replaced at the last minute by FRANCIS JOHNSTON  FRANCIS JOHNSTON because, among other reasons, he was a candidate for a surveyorship himself.(2) Together with Benjamin Meredith he made plans for improvements to the road between Cahir and Killarney in 1818 and between Killarney and Cahirciveen in 1821.(3)

In September 1820 Nimmo was appointed engineer to the Commissioners of the Irish Fisheries, charged with making a general survey of the coasts of Ireland and reporting on 'the most useful lines of communication between the principal harbours and interior of the country through the mountainous districts'. He had completed the coastal survey by the summer of 1821. In 1822 he was appointed engineer to the Western District, one of three new posts created under the Act for the Employment of the Poor in certain Districts of Ireland to initiate and supervise public works in the poorest and least developed parts of the country, which had been severely affected by the famine of that year. The Western District included Cos. Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo. To carry out his duties more easily he built himself a house in the heart of Connemara, Corrib Lodge, at Maam Cross. One of his most ambitious projects was the creation of a new town and harbour at Roundstone, Co. Galway. Meanwhile he retained his post under the Commissioners of Irish Fisheries until June1825, when part of his responsibilities were transferred to JAMES DONNELL JAMES DONNELL , who was appointed to the new post of harbour engineer.  Nimmo still had many irons in the fire, however.   He attracted increasing criticism in his role as engineer to the Western District both for the neglect of his duties - he spent an increasing amount of time in England - and for the high cost of his projects. In 1831, although he was never formally dismissed, he was replaced by JOHN KILLALY JOHN KILLALY ,

Nimmo maintained a private practice in Marlborough Street, Dublin, assisted by his brothers John and GEORGE NIMMO.& GEORGE NIMMO.& #160; Some of his commissions were in north-west England and Wales. One of his last undertakings in Ireland was to prepare the original plans for a railway from Dublin to Dun Laoghaire, which received the royal assent in September 1831, only months before his death.(5)   His health had started to deteriorate in 1827.  He died in Dublin, unmarried and intestate, at the age of forty-nine on 20 January 1832. After his death John and George Nimmo sold the Marlborough Street premises and moved to the west of Ireland, John dying in Roundstone in 1849, George in Ballynahinch in 1851.(6)

The number of engineering projects which Nimmo either initiated, designed or supervised during a relatively short life was enormous. His pupils and assistants included JAMES CLARKE [1] JAMES CLARKE [1] , William Grant, GEORGE HALPIN [2] GEORGE HALPIN [2] , JOHN HAWKSHAW JOHN HAWKSHAW , ALEXANDER HAY [1] ALEXANDER HAY [1] , WILLIAM JOHNSTON [3] WILLIAM JOHNSTON [3] , JOHN EDWARD JONES JOHN EDWARD JONES , the engineer-turned-sculptor who carved the bust of Nimmo now in the Royal Dublin Society, SAMUEL JONES [2] SAMUEL JONES [2] , PATRICK KNIGHT PATRICK KNIGHT , his nephew ALEXANDER NIMMO [2] ALEXANDER NIMMO [2] , and WILLIAM O'HARA [1]. WILLIAM O'HARA [1].

Addresses:(7) 78 Marlborough Street, Dublin, 1824-1830; Corner Elephant Lane, Marlborough Street, 1831-32. Also: Corrib Lodge, Maam Cross, Co. Galway.
