County surveyor for Co. Roscommon, 1923-1958. According to the 1911 census, Michael Nerney, a younger son of Roddy Nerney, farmer, of Cloonboyoge, Elphin, co. Roscommon, and his wife, Maggie, was born in Co. Roscommon in 1894 or 1895. He was educated at Elphin Grammar School, Summerhill College, Sligo, and University College, Galway, interrupting his studies to serve in the British Army during the First World War. He completed his studies after the war, obtaining the BE degree. He is presumably the same person as the 'Lieut. Nerney of Elphin…a near relative of Father Coney, P.P., Athleague, and Father O'Beirne, C.C.' who was one of the twelve candidates who applied for the county surveyorship of Co. Roscommon, left vacant by the death of CHRISTOPHER JOHN MULVANY , in 1919 and was eventually appointed in December 1923. He remained in office until November 1958. He died on 28 July 1965 and was buried in St Coman's cemetery, Roscommon. He was survived by his wife, Ita, one daughter and three sons.
