Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Belfast. John McBride Neill was born in Belfast on 26 June 1905 and educated at the Belfast Academical Institution. In 1922, when he was seventeen, he was articled to ROBERT LYNN  ROBERT LYNN of Belfast. During the four years of his pupilage he also attended architectural and building construction classes at the Belfast School of Art and was a prize winner in the Sir Charles Lanyon Memorial Competition for measured drawings. On completing his pupilage he became Lynn's assistant. After Lynn's early death from typhoid at the end of 1928, he carried on the practice at 14 Ann Street under his own name. Lynn had designed a cinema at Lurgan, which Neill saw to its completion; this proved to be the first step in his career as the leading cinema architect in Northern Ireland. He was otherwise chiefly engaged in the design of commercial housing in Belfast and its suburbs. A bachelor, he retired when he was sixty,(1) freeing himself to indulge in Continental travel, music, sailing and making model aeroplanes. He died in 1974.

RIBA: elected licentiate, 9 July 1946, having been proposed by THOMAS ROBERT EAGAR  THOMAS ROBERT EAGAR and president and hon. Secretary of RSUA.(2)
RSUA: elected associate, 1927.

Addresses: Work: 14 Ann Street, Belfast, 1922-1946; 7 Chichester Street, Belfast, 1946-1965.
Home: Ben Edar, Holywood, Co. Down, <=1946-1974.
