MCNAMARA, CHARLES GERALD
- Born: 1900 Died: -
Engineer, of Dublin. Charles G. McNamara, eldest child of THOMAS FRANCIS MCNAMARA , was born in Dublin on 11 December 1900. He was educated at the University School and Belvedere College, Dublin, and received his practical training in his father's office between 1916 and 1919. From 1918 he studied engineering at University College, Dublin, graduating BE in 1922. After graduating he worked for the Office of Public Works in various districts of Ireland before joining his father and brother PATRICK NOEL MCNAMARA in practice at 5 Dawson Street in 1927. The following year he went to Ceylon, where he worked first as a district engineer in the Public Works Department and then for the Port Service. In 1936 he retired on a pension under the Donoughmore scheme and returned to Dublin, where he set up in independent practice at 29 Molesworth Street. Between 1938 and 1939 he undertook various projects in partnership with - Kennard, probably an English architect or engineer.(1) He was consulting engineer to Mayo and Waterford County Councils and to the Clare, Laois and Carlow Boards of Health. He incorporated his father's practice into his own after his father's death in 1947, taking on N.R. MacGovern as a new partner in the architectural section and moving his office to Merrion Square.(2) The practice became known as C.G. McNamara & Partners. He died on 7 December 1965.(3)
