Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and engineer, of Dundalk. John Francis McGahon was born in Dundalk on 12 July 1874, the son of Denis McGahon, shop owner and merchant. His mother was a daughter of John Charles Fitzgerald, MA, and his brother Thomas Fitzgerald McGahon was later to become the editor of The Dundalk Democrat. John Francis was educated at the Christian Brothers School, Dundalk, and served his apprenticeship with PETER CAHILL PETER CAHILL , engineer to the Dundalk Harbour Board. After finishing his apprenticeship in August 1894, he worked for five years with James Wynne, a builder who specialized in ecclesiastical work, for whom he acted as works manager and general assistant. During this period he travelled in England to look at ancient and modern architecture and studied and was awarded prizes under the South Kensington system. He also taught art at St Mary's College, Dundalk, and at the Dundalk Education Institution. In 1901 he set up in private practice in Dundalk, carrying out both public and private work. He was responsible for a considerable amount of labourers' housing in Cos. Louth and Monaghan. Of these houses T.F. McGahon wrote in his obituary of his brother in The Dundalk Democrat: 'Even the modest rural cottages that he planned for Louth, whose sites he chose and whose construction he supervised, are known far and wide for their simple, but arresting, beauty. The "Irish Builder and Engineer" said of them that "they are the best solution of the rural housing problem that he have met with."' John F. McGahon was elected engineer in connection with the labourers' cottage scheme for Castleblayney in 1908(1) and was appointed engineer to Carrickmacross RDC in 1913(2) and to Ardee Rural District Council a little later. He was also architect and engineer to Carrickmacross Urban District Council, to the Dundalk Harbour Board, to the Co. Louth Board of Health and to the Co. Louth Vocational Education Committee. In about 1931 he took his second son THOMAS PIUS MCGAHON  THOMAS PIUS MCGAHON into partnership, practising as JOHN F. MCGAHON & SON JOHN F. MCGAHON & SON . He died on 17 April 1936, leaving a widow and six sons, including Thomas, mentioned above. He was buried in the cemetery at Dundalk on 19 April after a funeral in St Patrick's church. Some time after his death his fifth son, Cormac, who became a student of the RIAI in 1937, also entered the practice.
