Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Belfast. John Joseph McDonnell, son of John McDonnell, was born in Belfast on 1 December 1857 and was educated at Roseland Academy and privately. He received his architectural training in the office of TIMOTHY HEVEY  TIMOTHY HEVEY and set up his own practice in 1881. In about 1921 he formed the partnership of MCDONNELL MCDONNELL , LAMONT & LAMONT & amp; MCDONNELL  MCDONNELL presumably with HUGH LAMONT  HUGH LAMONT and with his son ALEXANDER EDWARD MCDONNELL ALEXANDER EDWARD MCDONNELL . At about the same time his health began to fail. He died on 23 September 1924 at his house, Loretto, 630 Ravenhill Road, Belfast. McDonnell was a Justice of the Peace from 1893 and a member of the Corporation from the late 1890s. He was married in 1886 to Hessie, daughter of James Brennan, of Belfast, by whom he had four sons and four daughters.

McDonnell's pupils and assistants included T.M. BELL, ROBERT DONNELLY ROBERT DONNELLY , EDWARD P. NOBLE  EDWARD P. NOBLE and THOMAS J. O'NEILL.& THOMAS J. O'NEILL.& #160;  He was a subscriber to George Lister Sutcliffe, The Principles and Practice of Modern House-Construction (London, 1898).
