Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer, of Dublin. Patrick McCarthy, son of Patrick McCarthy of Glenmore, Co. Limerick, was born at Strand, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick, on 22 November 1868. He was educated at the local school and by private tutors, before entering the office of SAMUEL GORDON FRASER  SAMUEL GORDON FRASER in February 1889. He spent ten years with Fraser, first as a pupil and then as an assistant, during which he was engaged on plans for various railways, light railways and tramways, including the Ballina & Killala Railway, the Collooney & Claremorris Railway and the Dublin Southern Tramways. He was resident engineer on the construction of the Dublin to Dalkey and Poulaphouca Tramway lines. In October 1897, when he was twenty-eight, he enrolled at Trinity College, Dublin, where he distinguished himself in the School of Engineering, graduating BA and BAI in June 1901. The MA degree was conferred on him in December 1904.

In January 1899, while he was still a student at Trinity, McCarthy set up his own consulting practice in Dublin. From 1905 until 1906 he was briefly in partnership with EDGAR ANDERSON  EDGAR ANDERSON as MCCARTHY & MCCARTHY & amp; ANDERSON. ANDERSON. (1) He developed an extensive practice, above all in the field of hydraulic engineering, being responsible for a large number of sewerage, drainage and water supply systems in Co. Dublin and other parts of Ireland. In 1910 he was appointed consulting engineer and architect for Bray Urban District Council,(2) and in 1912 to the Rathdown No. 1 Rural District Council.(3) From 1912 he was also engineer to Rathdown Union Board of Guardians, receivng a regular salary of £150 a year from 1920 onwards.(4)  He was external examiner in the Faculty of Engineering of the National University of Ireland from 1912 until 1915.(5) Among his many undertakings, he was consulting engineer to the Dublin and Blessington Tramways, to the Royal Dublin Society in connection with its grounds and buildings, to the Dublin Port and Docks Board in connection with the development of overseas traffic, advised on the preparation of contract documents for the Shannon Power scheme and was a member of the Canal and Inland Waterways commission of 1922-23.

McCarthy was still engaged in active practice when he died suddenly on 29 April 1942. An appreciation in the Irish Builder by 'E.A.' - presumably his former partner Edgar Anderson - recalls him as an unobtrusive man of 'rare integrity and thoroughness': 'Few dared to question the authority of any document that bore the initials of "P.H.". Cautious and slow to reach a conclusion, his opinions were held with unusual tenacity.'(6) He had married on 27 June 1900, Mary Josephine, daughter of Roger Greene, a Dublin solicitor. His son and partner, PATRICK JOSEPH MCCARTHY PATRICK JOSEPH MCCARTHY , carried on the practice for some years. Another of his sons, Roger McCarthy trained as an architect in his office and in the office of THOMAS JOSEPH CULLEN THOMAS JOSEPH CULLEN . Other pupils and assistants included MICHAEL GERRARD DEE MICHAEL GERRARD DEE (7)  and JOHN KYLE PRENDERGAST. JOHN KYLE PRENDERGAST.
