Civil engineer and architect, of Timoleague, Co. Cork. Joseph McCarthy was born at Timoleague in 1884, the youngest son of Patrick McCarthy of Timoleague, and was educated at the French College, Blackrock, Co. Dublin, and Queen's College, Cork. He was engineer to Skibbereen Rural District Council, to the Bandon Town Commissioners, to Clonakilty Urban District Council and to the Poor Law Board, as well as running a private practice. He appears to have been active until at least 1915, when he was listed under the heading 'Civil Engineers, Architects, etc.' in Guy's Cork Almanac and Directory. A Nationalist in his politics, he professed a keen interest 'in all Irish movements'.
