Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer and architect, of Belfast. Francis McArdle, who was born on 7 August 1885, trained as an engineer. He attended the Municipal Technical Institute in Belfast from 1900 to 1907 while serving a pupilage first with J. & T.M. Greeves of the Forth River Mills, Belfast, and then with Coombe Barbour of the Falls Foundry . From 1909 to 1910 he worked as an assistant in the engineering firm of Musgrave and Co. In 1910 he became an assistant to HENRY ALBERT CUTLER HENRY ALBERT CUTLER , city engineer of Belfast. After spending the First World War with the Belfast shipbuilders, Harland & Wolff, he set up in private practice in Belfast. From circa 1922 to circa 1925 he was briefly in partnership with his brother JOHN P. MCARDLE  JOHN P. MCARDLE as F. & J. MCARDLE MCARDLE . He carried out a number of churches and other buildings for the Catholic church in Belfast, as well as commercial developments and housing projects. In 1941 Queen's University, Belfast, conferred the M.Sc.degree on him for research work.(1) At about the same time he gave up his office at 29 Rosemary Street in central Belfast but continued to practise from his home in Andersonstown. He was president of the RSUA for the sessions 1944-45 and 1945-46 and of the RIAI for 1948 and 1949. He died on 21 April 1965, leaving a widow, two daughters and a son.
