Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Stained glass artist, of Dublin.   George McAlister, who is said to have been a son of the head porter at Trinity College, Dublin, was born in Dublin in 1786.   Originally trained as a jeweller, he turned his attention to painting on glass 'without the aid of patronage, instruction or pecuniary assistance'.(Ryan)   Having finished the east window for Lismore Church of Ireland cathedral, he was commissioned to do windows for the chancel of Tuam cathedral.   He died while he was working on the latter on 14 June 1812 at the age of twenty-six.  After his death his three sisters completed the commission and carried on the studio until 1828.
