Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. Albert Edward Murray was born in Dublin on 11 May 1849, the second son of WILLIAM GEORGE MURRAY WILLIAM GEORGE MURRAY . After being educated privately(1) in Dublin, he was articled to his father. He also attended the Royal Dublin Society's School of Art, where he won several awards,(see IB 11, 1 Feb 1869, 33) and travelled in France, Italy and England.(2) He worked in the office of JOHN MCCURDY  JOHN MCCURDY before succeeding to his father's practice in 1871.(3) In 1873 he entered into partnership with GEORGE CARLISLE HENDERSON. GEORGE CARLISLE HENDERSON. (4) The partnership, known as HENDERSON & HENDERSON & amp; MURRAY MURRAY , lasted for five years until 1878,(5) after which Murray practised on his own for a further forty-five years. During his long career he became best known for his hospital work, but he also carried out a large number of commercial and domestic commissions. When Queen Victoria visited Dublin in 1900, Murray was responsible for the decorations in Sackville Street and also for those in Clyde Road, where he lived.(6)

Murray was closely involved in the affairs of the RIAI, which, when he became honorary secretary in 1883, had almost withered away and which he was active in reviving and placing on a sound financial footing. Council meetings were held at his office in 37 Dawson Street for many years. He was president of the Institute from 1910 to 1913 and presented the gold and enamel presidential badge of office.(7) Having become a member of the old AAI in 1873,(8) he became a founder member of the revived association in 1896. He was also a member of the Architectural Association in London and was a regular participant in its annual excursions for many years.

Murray was examiner in the Diploma of Public Health of the Royal College of Physicians from 1887 to1896(9) and external examiner in architecture to the Royal University of Ireland from 1913 to 1914.(10) He was appointed assessor for various architectural competitions: the Cork Sanatorium Competition, 1907,(11) the AAI Institute Prize, 1909,(12) and the Municipal Offices competition, 1913.(13) He was frequently retained as an expert witness in building cases. In addition to his professional activities, he was an active freemason and a governor of Mercer's Hospital. He named his favorite recreations as yachting, fishing, golf and sketching.(14) 'In the social life of Dublin,' wrote his obituarist in the Irish Builder, 'no one was better known than he.'

Following his retirement in May 1923,(15) Murray donated his important collection of Irish architectural drawings by FRANCIS JOHNSTON FRANCIS JOHNSTON , WILLIAM MURRAY  WILLIAM MURRAY and others to the RIAI.(16) Before he left Ireland for a 'lengthy holiday' on the Continent, the members of the Institute presented him with 'a neat gold wristlet watch'.(17) He died after a brief illness at Dinard, France,on 20 March 1924.(18) He was survived by his wife, Amelia (Amy) Henrietta, daughter of his relative Andrew Johnston, of Dublin, and a great grand-niece of FRANCIS JOHNSTON FRANCIS JOHNSTON , whom he had married on 23 April 1902,(19) and by their son and daughter.  In 1924 Mrs Murray presented a number of books and pictures and a bust of JAMES GANDON  JAMES GANDON to the RIAI.(20)

Murray's pupils and assistants included WILLIAM HARRISON HARGRAVE  WILLIAM HARRISON HARGRAVE and FREDERICK JAMES MACAULAY. FREDERICK JAMES MACAULAY.

The Irish Architectural Archive now holds Murray's collection of architectural drawings mentioned above (Acc. 92/46) and a scrapbook of personal and architectural material which Murray compiled post 1904 (Acc. 87/58).
