Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Borough engineer for Kilkenny City, 1909-1930. Richard Murphy, son of Jervois Murphy and his wife Joanna, née Thaw, was born in Rathcormac, Co. Cork, on 1 August 1866.(1)   He was apprenticed to WILLIAM CRAWFORD RYDER WILLIAM CRAWFORD RYDER , of Cork from 1883 to 1888 and was subsequently employed in the works branch of the War Department until at least 1905. He appears to have been based in Waterford for most or all of  the first decade of the twentienth century:  according to his 1911 census return, he married his Waterford-born wife, Mary Ellen, in 1901 or 1902, and his daughter and a son were born in the city between 1903 and 1905.  He was still living there when he was appointed borough engineer for Kilkenny in 1909 in succession to JOHN ANTONINUS GUERRINI. JOHN ANTONINUS GUERRINI. (2)  He held the Kilkenny post for about twenty years and was succeeded by RICHARD FRANCIS BOWEN  RICHARD FRANCIS BOWEN in 1930.(3)
