MURPHY, EDWARD M.
- Born: 1890 Died: 1952
Engineer and architect, of Dublin. Edward Murphy was born in Dublin in 1890, the son of a barrister who emigrated to South Africa.(1) He received his early education in South Africa, but, following his father's death, returned to Dublin, where he attended Belvedere and Clongowes Wood Colleges. After leaving school he studied mechanical and electrical engineering at the Great Northern Railway works in Dundalk and then took an engineering degree at the National University of Ireland. On leaving college he worked in the office of PATRICK HARNETT MCCARTHY. (2) He then practised in England for some years but had returned to Dublin by 1922, when he was living in Bray. He was appointed town surveyor for Bray in 1925.(3) He was consulting engineer to various public bodies, including the Co. Dublin Libraries Committee,(4) Galway County Council, Co. Kerry Board of Health, the Balbriggan and Skerries water supply scheme, Irish Steel, Haulbowline, Solus Teorante and the new Dublin Fever Hospital. He was interested in the development of Irish mineral resources and was a director of Mianri Teoranta. He died on 6 July 1952. His pupils and assistants included JOHN JOSEPH WINTERS.
