MUNTZ, JOHANN HEINRICH #
- Born: 1727 Died: 1798
Swiss painter and amateur architect. Johann Heinrich Müntz, who came to England in 1755 as a protegé of Horace Walpole, was patronized by the Earl of Charlemont in the 1760s. For Charlemont's park at Marino, Dublin, Müntz produced a set of designs for an oval 'Egiptian Building'(1) in 1762. There is no evidence that it was executed. The Countess - subsequently Duchess - of Northumberland admired 'a very handsome Gothic Room' in the grounds at Marino in October 1763; this building, which had a square or rectangular plan with a tower in stages and a small spire, may possibly have been designed by Müntz.(2)
