Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and engineer, of Dublin. Patrick Munden was born in Allahabad, India, in 1883,(1) the son of James Munden, Garrison Serjeant Major to the Indian Army at Allahabad. Following his father's death from influenza on 11 April 1890,(2) he was brought home from India to Dublin, where his mother settled at a house in Oxford Street, Ranelagh. Munden became a pupil at the Synge Street Christian Brothers' School and by the time of the 1901 census was working as a clerk in the office of a civil engineer, probably PATRICK HARNETT MCCARTHY.& PATRICK HARNETT MCCARTHY.& #160;  He is also said to have worked in the office of W.H. BYRNE & BYRNE & amp; SON and to have acted as foreman for the Dublin building contractors, MCLAUGHLIN & MCLAUGHLIN & amp; HARVEY HARVEY . From 1910 to the end of 1912, he was clerk of works to BRIAN EDWARD FITZGERALD SHEEHY  BRIAN EDWARD FITZGERALD SHEEHY of Limerick. During these early years he was an active member of the AAI.

In January 1913 Munden opened his own office in Exchequer Street, Dublin.(3) He was encouraged to take this step by the Very Reverend James Dunne, president of Holy Cross Diocesan Seminary, Clonliffe, who interested himself in Munden's career and was instrumental in obtaining for him the commission to design the new Catholic church at Ashford, Co. Wicklow, in 1914. It was through Dunne that Munden was introduced to the Sisters of the Holy Faith, for whom he acted as architect and architectural adviser throughout his career. He was also architect to Grangegorman Mental Hospital.(4) With few exceptions, most notably the hospital building scheme for the Co. Mayo Board of Health which he carried out in the 1930s, all his work was in the city and neighbourhood of Dublin. His pupils and assistants included John Francis McCormack and FERGUS JAMES RYAN FERGUS JAMES RYAN . After the Second World War he entered into partnership with Frank Purcell, who married his daughter Mercedes, herself an architect. His son Patrick Joseph Munden, ARIBA, also joined the practice. Patrick Munden, senior, died on 21 March 1962. The firm of Munden & Purcell continued until the end of the 1980s.

Munden took an active interest in politics and was a keen supporter of the Irish Language Movement. He was a member of the Irish Volunteers and marched to Howth in the gun-running episode of 1914. At the time of the Easter Rising, though not himself in action, he was arrested and held for a while in Dublin Castle. He stood as a parliamentary candidate in the general elections of 1919 and 1923.(5) For several years he represented the Rathmines and Pembroke townships on Dublin County Council. He was a member of the Dublin Port and Docks Board for many years (6) until 1960.

In 1985 Frank Purcell gave a large collection of drawings and related records from the office to the Irish Architectural Archive (Acc. 85/41), followed by a further donation in 1988 (Acc. 88/119).
