Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer and architect, of Belfast. James Stilwell Munce, who was probably the son of JAMES MUNCE JAMES MUNCE , was born on 24 May 1878 and educated at Sullivan Upper School, Holywood, Co. Down. He entered the School of Engineering at Queen's College, Belfast, in 1897, obtaining the BE degree in 1900. From 1900 until 1902 he trained as an assistant to LUKE LIVINGSTON MACASSEY LUKE LIVINGSTON MACASSEY , working on waterworks schemes for Belfast, Bangor, Holywood, Fermoy, Enniskillen, and Kilkenny. Between 1902 and 1903 he worked under JAMES HANNA  JAMES HANNA and JAMES HERON  JAMES HERON on various engineering projects before moving to London to join the Works Department of London County Council. He remained in England until 1911, when he returned to Belfast to set up in independent practice as an engineer and architect. In 1919 he entered into partnership with EDWIN RIDDELL KENNEDY EDWIN RIDDELL KENNEDY , to form the firm of MUNCE & KENNEDY MUNCE & KENNEDY . After Kennedy's death in 1930, he carried on the practice under the same name until his own death in 1952. For several years he was part-time surveyor to Carrickfergus Urban District Council but gave up the post in 1934, 'owing to pressure of business'.(1) James Frederick Munce, ARIBA, who was presumably his son, continued the practice but changed its name to James Munce & Partners in the 1960s.

In 1920 Munce gave a lecture on 'The Belfast of the Past',(2) but there is no other evidence, in the pages of the Irish Builder at least, of his knowledge of or interest in historical architecture.
