Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Dublin borough surveyor, 1925-1935. According to the 1911 census, Michael Moynihan was born in Co. Roscommon in 1874 or 1875 and had moved to Dublin with his Mayo-born wife, Mary, by the time of the birth of his elder son, Thomas, in 1899 or 1900.   In Dublin he joined the Corporation's engineering department and was working as an assistant engineer under SPENCER HARTY  SPENCER HARTY in 1901.(1) By 1906 he had been placed in charge of the Corporation waterworks(2) and in 1916 he was appointed deputy borough surveyor under MICHAEL JAMES BUCKLEY MICHAEL JAMES BUCKLEY . In 1925 he succeeded Buckley as borough surveyor, holding the position for ten years until his resignation in 1935. According to a note on his resignation in the Irish Builder, 'his release from the heavy routine of administration' signalized his 'concentration on building the new aqueducts and service reservoirs which are to link up Poulaphuca with the sinks and bathrooms of North Dublin'.(3)

ICEI: elected member, 2 March 1931;(4) council member, 1932-34; awarded Mullins Silver Medal for paper, 'Future possible extension of the Dublin water supply', read 9 January 1933;(5) no longer a member after 1947.
Royal Sanitary Institute: fellow by 1933.
