- Selected:
MORRISON, RICHARD (SIR)
- Born: 1767 Died: 1849
Architect, of Clonmel and Dublin. Richard Morrison was born in 1767, the son of JOHN MORRISON [1] and his wife, Elizabeth. Frederick Hervey, Bishop of Cloyne, and the Richard, Second Earl of Shannon were his godparents. He was admitted to the Dublin Society's School of Drawing in Architecture on 4 May 1786 and was awarded a first-class medal for elevations and plans the following 30 November.(1) According to his son Dr John Morrison, he was also a pupil of JAMES GANDON , being 'enabled to pursue his studies with advantage from the emoluments of a government appointment in the Ordnance Department, which was procured for him through the influence of the Earl of Shannon'.(2) In 1791, soon after losing this position through staff reductions, he designed a new tower and spire for Cashel cathedral. According to John Morrison, he practised in the South of Ireland for some years and was living in Clonmel, when his second son, WILLIAM VITRUVIUS MORRISON , was born in April 1794. As author of 'Observations on the Giant's Causeway in the County of Antrim', published in Anthologia Hibernica in August 1793, he describes himself as 'R. Morrison, Architect, Clonmell', yet he gives his address as 8 Summerhill, Dublin, in the introduction to his book, Useful and Ornamental designs in architecture, which was published in the same year.(3) He appears to have moved to Dublin permanently by 1801.(4) By this time he had four sons by his wife Eliza, whom he had married in 1790. She was the daughter of the Rev. William Ould, who, in addition to other benefices, was curate of Killaderry church at Philipstown, Co. Offaly, and chaplain to the Rotunda Hospital, of which his father Sir Fielding Ould, had been the Master.(5)
From 1809, when he produced his freakishly prococious early project for Ballyheigue Castle, William Vitruvius Morrison collaborated with his father on many projects, though when or for how long (if at all) father and son were formally in partnership is not clear. According to Dr John Morrison, Richard Morrison found in his son 'an exhaustless mine of taste in design and composition'. William Morrison appears to have set up in independent practice about 1825. After this date there is a sharp decline in the number of Richard's recorded works. He stepped in at Baronscourt after William had become too ill to continue work there, and a few commissions date from after William's death in 1838, by which time he was an old man.(6) Dr John Morrison, commenting on the professional jealousy which Richard Morrison's father felt towards his son, italicizes the words 'jealousy', 'that profession' and 'son' in a manner which appears to be intended to suggest that Richard was similarly jealous of William.
Richard Morrison was architect to Trinity College, Dublin from 20 December 1806(7) at a salary of £25 per quarter. He held the post until the end of 1831, when he was succeeded by JAMES BOLGER [2]. (8) In 1821 he applied unsuccessfully to succeed FRANCIS JOHNSTON as architect to the Board of Works.(9) In the last years of his life, following the death of William Vitruvius in 1838, he busied himself in the affairs of the Institute of the Architects of Ireland, which he founded in 1839.(10) He established links with the RIBA and with the Scottish Institute.(11) It was apparently in recognition of this achievement that he was knighted in 1841 on the occasion of his presenting an address from the RIAI to the Lord Lieutenant, Lord Fortescue.(12) In 1844 he delivered another such address to Earl De Gray, expressing gratitude fo his enlightened patronage and his services to architecture,(13) but in 1847 when he headed a deputation of members of the Institute to wait on another Lord Lieutenant, the fourth Earl of Clarendon, he deplored the condition of Irish architecture.(14)
Richard Morrison died at the age of eighty-three on 31 October 1849 at his home, Walcot (alias Vaucluse) near Bray, and was buried in the family vault at Mount Jerome Cemetery on 7 November. His pupils and assistants included JOHN BOWDEN , OWEN FAHY , JOHN HAMPTON and JOHN B. KEANE.& #160; His library was sold at auction in Dublin in June 1851.(15)
