Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

County surveyor for the eastern division of Co. Galway, 1909, for the whole county from 1910, and for the western division from 1913. John Moran, son of James Moran of Ballysteen, Co. Limerick,(1) was born in Co. Limerick in 1865 or 1866, according to his 1911 census return. An engineering graduate,(2) he was town surveyor for Omagh, Co. Tyrone, from 1906 or earlier.(3) In June 1909, he was appointed county surveyor for the eastern division of Co. Galway, his staunch nationalism, Catholicism and enthusiasm for the Irish language, being cited as features in his favour.(4)  His duties were extended to cover the whole county the following year, but in 1913 were reduced again to cover the western division only. He had died by 1917. At the time of the 1911 census he had been married for nineteen years to his Co. Wicklow-born wife, Catherine, and had seven children.
