MOORE, WILLIAM J.

Architect, of Belfast. William J. Moore, who was born circa 1873, had set up an office in Ann Street, Belfast, by 1896. In about 1909 he formed a brief partnership with a person named Flanigan, probably his former pupil JOHN GERALD FLANIGAN , practising as MOORE & amp; FLANIGAN until 1911. In this year he and WILLIAM JOHN FENNELL were chosen to adjudicate in the Lanyon Competition.(1) In 1920 he was appointed to the position of architect under the new housing scheme by Armagh City Council.(2) He died at his home in Andersonstown in his forty-eighth year in 1921, survived by his wife and eight children. His pupils and assistants included John Gerald Flanigan, HUGH LAMONT and EDWIN RIDDELL KENNEDY.& #160; He was a subscriber to George Lister Sutcliffe, ed., The Principles and Practice of Modern House-Construction (London, 1898).
While developing a very varied architectural practice, Moore was also active in the affairs of Belfast Corporation. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace for the county borough of the city of Belfast in 1906(3) and elected one of the Councillors for Falls Ward in 1907. In 1910 he became an alderman, and he also served as vice-chairman of the Improvement Committee until 1919.
