BECKETT, JOHN WALLACE

Architect, of Dublin. According to the 1911 census, John Wallace Beckett, a son of JAMES BECKETT and a younger brother of GEORGE FRANCIS BECKETT , was born in Co. Dublin circa 1888. He was working in the G.F. Beckett's office by 1910 and remained in it until 1911. His elevation and details of the Rotunda Hospital were published in the Irish Builder in 1909,(1) and his measured drawing of the same in the Architect's Journal for 1919.(2) He showed a watercolour at the AAI's exhibition in 1910, when a critic in the Irish Builder commented that his 'drawing is careful but his colour is spotty & rather crude and he needs to study masses more and to pay less attention to detail'.(3)
AAI: elected member, 1904; wins first prize for Architectural History 1904,(4) wins second prize for building construction 1906;(5) President's Prize 1908;(6) no longer a member after 1911.
