MILLS, WILLIAM HEMINGWAY
- Born: 1834 Died: 1918
Chief engineer of the Great Northern Railway Company from 1876 until 1910. William Hemingway Mills was born in Yorkshire in 1834 and in 1850 became a pupil of William Henry Barlow. After working on railways in Scotland, Andalucia and Mexico, he was appointed chief engineer of the Great Northern Railway in 1876, a position which he held until his retirement in 1910, when he was succeeded by FREDERICK ARTHUR CAMPION . He was an active member of the Institution of Civil Engineers of Ireland and is said to have interested himself in many charitable works. He died at home in Glenageary on 12 January 1918.(1) His pupils and assistants included JOSHUA HARRISON HARGRAVE.

IB 29, 1 Aug 1887, 222, reprints a short biography of Mills from the 'current number' of the English journal Invention, which 'furnishes a large lithographed sheet comprising portraits of "Locomotive Pioneers" and whose memoirs are given in the journal'.
