MILES, JOHN JOSEPH

'CE' and architect, of Dublin. According to the 1911 census returns, John Joseph Miles, eldest son of John T. Miles, art master at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, was born in 1881 or 1882. He served his apprenticeship with GEORGE TIGHE MOORE and served as Moore's assistant for nearly nine years before setting up his own practice in 1907. In 1910 he was chosen from six applicants for the post of engineer and architect to Edenderry, Co. Offaly, No. 3 Rural District Council,(1) and he is probably the 'Mr Miles' whose plans for tenements in Waterford were accepted by Waterford Corporation in 1909.(2) He disappears from the Dublin directories in 1918. An announcement in the Irish Times for 14 February 1915 records the birth of his daughter on 21 January.
