Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer and architect, of Dublin. Richard Gerald Chaytor Millar, who was born, according to the 1911 census, in 1898 or 1899, was the eldest son of ADAM GERALD CHAYTOR MILLAR  ADAM GERALD CHAYTOR MILLAR and brother of HERBERT VIVIAN MILLAR HERBERT VIVIAN MILLAR .   He studied engineering at Trinity College, Dublin, obtaining the BAI degree in 1922.(1) After a brief period with the Assam Railway Company at Chittagong,(2) he entered the family architectural and engineering practice of MILLAR & MILLAR & amp; SYMES  SYMES in 1926 or 1927. In the latter year A.G.C. Millar became a full-time member of the staff of the Bank of Ireland, leaving his two sons in charge of the practice. Gerald Millar effectively ran the office after his brother succeeded his father as architect to the Bank of Ireland in 1943. He continued the practice after the deaths of his father and brother in 1957 and 1958 respectively until circa 1966. He had died by 1976, when his widow Mrs D. Millar (nee Westrop, a granddaughter of Charles? Lanyon) held a substantial collection of material relating to the practice and the family.
