Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. 'Toby' Millar, the younger son of ADAM GERALD CHAYTOR MILLAR ADAM GERALD CHAYTOR MILLAR , was born in 1902. After studying engineering at the Royal College of Science, he served his articles with his father(1) in the office of MILLAR & SYMES MILLAR & SYMES . Hesubsequently became a partner. From 1927, when their father became a full-time member of the staff of the Bank of Ireland, Toby Millar and his elder brother, RICHARD GERALD MILLAR RICHARD GERALD MILLAR , took charge of the practice. In 1943 Toby Millar succeeded his father as architect to the Bank of Ireland; although he was theoretically employed on a half-time basis, he was more or less permanently engaged on the bank's business, leaving Gerald Millar to run Millar & Symes. His obituarist in the RIAI Yearbookcredits him with the the design of a series of strong rooms and safe deposit vaults of a unique type. He was also architect to the Royal Zoological Society.

Toby Millar died suddenly in June 1958. He was survived by his wife and five daughters. In his leisure time he was a keen yachtsman, and as a young man he had been an active member of the AAI's drama group.

All information in this entry not otherwise accounted for is from the obituary of Millar in RIAI Year Book (1959), 10, and from information supplied by Mrs D. Millar, widow of Richard Gerald Millar, to Nicholas Sheaff and Alistair Rowan when they visited her in 1976. At that time Mrs Millar had a collection of drawings and other documents relating to the practice and to the Millar family which were subsequently dispersed.. An appreciation of H.V. Millar was published in 'Oriel's Log', IB 100, 12 Jul 1958, 501, and a portrait photograph forms the frontispiece to AAI Green Book (1934). He appears in the group photograph taken on the occasion of Walter Gropius's lecture to the AAI, 10 November 1936, reproduced in Sean Rothery, Ireland and the New Architecture 1900-1940 (1991), 129.
