MILLER, GEORGE MACKAY

Railway engineer. George Mackay Miller who was born in Pentonville, London, spent the early part of his career working on railways in England and Jamaica. He came to Ireland in 1847 to take up the post of resident engineer 'combined with the duties of Locomotive Engineer and Superintendent of Rolling Stock' to the Great Southern & Western Railway, a post which he held until his death. His pupils and assitants included EDWARD JAMES MARTIN . He died on 4 January 1864 having 'caught cold whilst riding on an inclement day in the fulfilment of duty, on an engine'.
