Engineer and town surveyor of Newry, Co. Down. Joseph Leycester Devenish Meares, the third son of John Devenish Meares of Meares Court, Co. Westmeath, by his wife, Maria, daughter of Charles Kelly, of Charleville, Co. Westmeath, was born on 14 March 1838. He studied engineering at Trinity College, Dublin, receiving the Diploma in Civil Engineering in 1859. From 1872 to 1875, hes was resident engineer on the Newry & Armagh Railway and by 1883 he had been appointed town surveyor of Newry, Co. Down, a post which he held until at least 1902 but in which he had been succeeded by CHARLES BLANEY CHARLES BLANEY by 1907. His pupils and assitants included JOHN HARRIS HAZLETT SWINEY. Meares, who was a JP for Cos. Down and Armagh, married on 19 October 1864 Francis Georgina, daughter of Basil George Brooke, JP, of Dungannon, by whom he had five sons and five daughters.
