Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Cabinetmaker and plumber, of Dublin. Robert Mallet, who was baptised in North Tawton, Devon, on 16 January 1755, was.the youngest son of John Mallet, blacksmith, and his wife Jane (née Cunnett) and a brother of RICHARD MALLET RICHARD MALLET .    He came to Dublin from London in 1781(1) and set up in business as a cabinetmaker at 62 Capel Street. In 1782.   In Dublin he married Anne, daughter of William Pike, who had a plumbing business at 16 Ship Street   He was admitted a Freeman of the City of Dublin as a member of the Guild of Cabinetmakers by Grace Especial at Easter 1787(2) and was elected one of the representatives of the Guild of Joiners on the Common Council of Dublin in 1799 and again in 1802.(3)    In addition to cabinetmaking, Robert Mallet also manufactured 'all kinds of water and fire engines, forcing and lifting pumps, patent and common water closets'. After the death of William Pike in 1801, Robert Mallet  took over the  plumbing business in Ship Street. At some stage he was appointed plumber to the Board of Works; writing to the Board on 16 March 1802, he asked to be allowed to continue in the post.(4)    He died in 1804.  The business was carried on by his nephew and son-in-law JOHN MALLET JOHN MALLET , who had married his daughter Thomasina.
