LINKLATER, MORTIMER HENRY

Architect, of Belfast and Manchester. Mortimer Linklater was born in Blackrock, Co. Dublin, circa 1842.(1) He became a pupil of CHARLES LANYON (2) and may possibly have been working in the Dublin office of LANYON LYNN & LANYON when he was elected a student of the RIAI in 1864.(3) He is listed as a student of the institute in the membership list for 1866-7, where his address is given as 'care of C. Lanyon, Esq., Belfast', but was struck off on 30 October 1866.(4) In 1865 he submitted a design in the Belfast Albert Memorial Clock Tower competition, under the motto 'Bloody Hand' and was placed third.(5) By 1868 he was practising in Manchester,(6) where he remained until at least 1873.(7) He was ordained in the Church of England in 1877 and by 1881 had become curate of St Matthew's, Leicester. He continues to be listed in Crockford's Clerical Directory until circa 1901, when he was viHastings.
RIAI: elected student, 15 December 1864;(8) struck off, 30 October 1866.(9)
RIBA: elected associate, 19 January 1871, proposed by R. Kerr, C.F. Hayward and T. Roger Smith.
