Engineer. After graduating John Lane worked on the Shannon Power Development Scheme and then spent about fourteen years with a firm of public works contractors, engaged on road and housing development and water supply and sewerage schemes. From about 1945 he was engineering inspector in the Department of Local Government. He was appointed county engineer for Monaghan in December 1947 and was transferred to Co. Laois in 1949. He retired in 1974.
