KING, RICHARD JOSEPH *

Stained glass artist, of Dublin, for biography of whom see Theo Snoddy, Dictionary of Irish Artists: 20th Century (1996), 241-244.(1) Richard King, who was born in Castlebar, Co. Mayo, on 7 July 1907, entered the firm of J. Clarke and Sons in 1928. On the death of HARRY CLARKE in 1935, he became its manager. In 1940 he left to set up his own studio at Hawkcliff, Vico Terrace, Dalkey, where he produced stained glass windows for churches in Australia, Britain, Canada and the United States as well as for many churches in Ireland. He also painted and did graphic work, including several issues of postage stamps and illustrations for the Capuchin Annual. He died at his home in Raheny on St Patrick's Day, 1974.
