Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer.  According to the Irish census of 1901, Gustavus Kelly was born in Drogheda, Co. Louth, in 1847.   He received the Licentiate in Civil Engineering from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1870.   By 1883 he had become chief engineer to the Midland Great Western Railway Company, and in 1884 he designed Great Western Square, Phibsborough, a development of forty-two houses for employees of the company.(1) He had been succeeded by WILLIAM PURCELL O'NEIL  WILLIAM PURCELL O'NEIL by 1896.  He subsequently moved back to Drogheda, where he was living with his son Richard when the 1901 census was taken.   In 1902-3 he designed a new reservoir at Barnattin for Drogheda Corporation.(2)    He died in Drogheda in 1922.(3)  He had married in Longford in 1876(4) but was a widower at the time of the 1901 census.
