Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and civil engineer, of Dublin. William Kaye-Parry was born on 28 June 1853,(1) the son of William Parry, proprietor of the Salthill Hotel, Salthill, Co. Dublin.(2) He was articled to JOHN MCCURDY  JOHN MCCURDY from 1 November 1870 until 1 November 1873.(3) He subsequently entered Trinity College, Dublin, where he gained the BAI degree in 1875 with special certificates in practical engineering and in mechanical and experimental physics.(4) He started to practice independently as an architect and civil engineer in 1877 and in 1880 won a competition for a design for a concert hall at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, for which THOMAS DREW  THOMAS DREW acted as assessor.(5) In the same year he showed his first design at the RHA; he exhibited further designs in 1881, 1882, 1883, 1886 and 1896.(6) From 1889 until 1903 he was surveyor to the Kingstown Estate. He entered into partnership with GEORGE MURRAY ROSS  GEORGE MURRAY ROSS in late 1898 or early 1899, and in 1900 the partners opened a London office at 53 Victoria Street, Westminster, which was run by P.F. McKenzie Richards, AMICE. AMICE. (7)

It was as an engineer specializing in sewerage and domestic sanitation, as much as an architect, that Kaye-Parry established a reputation. He was engineer to a number of urban and district councils, designed drainage and sewage systems throughout the country and delivered many papers and lectures on sanitary matters.(8) His appointments in this connection included engineer to the Dublin Sanitary Association, 1883-1890,(9) consulting engineer to the Ulster Sanitary Association, 1891,(10) university examiner in practical sanitary engineering for the qualification of state medicine, Trinity College, Dublin, 1895,(11) and external examiner in sanitary engineering in the Faculty of Technology, Victoria University of Manchester.(12) He was a founder member of the Dublin Sanitary Association, from which developed the Dublin Artisans' Dwelling Company. An.early supporter of technical education,(13) he was chairman of the selection committee of the Appointments and Training branch of the Ministry of Labour.

His obituarist in the journal of the RIAI describes Kaye-Parry as a man with a logical mind, exceptional soundness of judgment and boundless energy, whose 'austere and occasionally dictatorial manner' hid 'a very kindly disposition and a generous appreciation of work well done'.  A religious turn of mind is suggested by the fact that in April 1889 he addressed the annual meeting of the Sunday School Association of Ireland with a talk entitled 'Childish Things'.(14)

Kaye-Parry never fully recovered from a severe accident in 1921, when he broke his thigh in two places.(15) In 1926 or 1927 ARNOLD HENDY ARNOLD HENDY , an assistant in the practice, was taken into the partnership which became known as KAYE-PARRY ROSS & KAYE-PARRY ROSS & amp; HENDY HENDY . During the last years of his life, probably from the mid 1920s onwards, Kaye-Parry lived in London, where he died, aged 79, after a long illness on 10 November 1932.(16) He was married and had at least three sons, one of whom, Eric, was a civil engineer, and a daughter.(17)

Kaye-Parry's pupils and assistants included LORENZO BAKER LORENZO BAKER , EDWIN BRADBURY EDWIN BRADBURY , HENRY JOHN LYONS HENRY JOHN LYONS , GEORGE L. O'CONNOR. THOMAS JOHNSON RUSHTON GEORGE L. O'CONNOR. THOMAS JOHNSON RUSHTON , JAMES BRAMWELL SMITH  JAMES BRAMWELL SMITH and THOMAS PETTIT WARDROP THOMAS PETTIT WARDROP . Competitions for which he acted as assessor included RIAI housing of working class in towns in Ireland competition, 1919,(18) Cobh houses competition, 1919,(19) and Ballymena Town Hall competition.(20)
