Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

County surveyor for Co. Westmeath , 1876-1927. Arthur Edward Joyce, a son of Arthur Appleyard Joyce, JP, of Rahasane Park, co. Galway, was born on 10 May 1851. He studied engineering at the Royal College of Science for three years and received the diploma in engineering in June 1875. He then spent eighteen months as a pupil of JAMES PRICE [1] JAMES PRICE [1] . On 15 December 1876 he was appointed county surveyor for Westmeath, a position which he filled with courteous and genial efficiency for fifty years. In addition, according to his obituary in the Westmeath Examiner, he 'mapped and planned the Rosslare and Fishguard route' and was a promoter of the Mullingar, Kells & Drogheda Railway and the Mullingar& Mountmellick Railway.

Joyce died on 11 January 1927 as the result of a hunting accident. He had been an enthusiastic member of the Westmeath Hunt throughout the fifty years he lived in the county, and was also responsible for the formation of the Westmeath Polo Club in 1881. After his funeral at Mullingar Cathedral, his coffin was carried through the town by the road workers who had been associated with him, in tribute to his personal popularity and professional effectiveness. He was buried in Walshestown cemetery. At the time of the 1911 census he was a widower.
