Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Chairman of the Board of Public Works in Ireland, 1845-1850. For a full account of Jones's distinguished career as an officer in the Royal Engineers see Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Jones was appointed a member of the Commission for the improvement of the River Shannon on 2 December 1835 and first commissioner for fixing the municipal boundaries in Ireland on 11 February 1836. On 20 October 1836 he was made secretary to the Irish railway commission. He also prepared a report on the state of distress in Co. Donegal. After spending a few months in 1839 as commanding Royal Engineer in Jersey, he was seconded and re-appointed to the Shannon commission. On 15 October 1845 he was appointed chairman of the Board of Public Works in Ireland, holding the position until March 1850, when he reverted to military duties in England. He was one of the Dublin Wide Streets Commissioners from 1848 until 1850.
