Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

County surveyor for Co. Tipperary, 1834-1852. According to Maria Edgeworth, Samuel Jones was a carpenter's son from Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford, and was brought up by her brother WILLIAM EDGEWORTH WILLIAM EDGEWORTH , who 'made a trigonometrical surveyor of him'. From her account, written in 1834, Jones had already made a considerable amount of money working for ALEXANDER NIMMO [1]  ALEXANDER NIMMO [1] in the west of Ireland, and was building a 'fine house' for himself - Ardbear House, near Clifden - while his brothers remained in 'rags and whiskey' at Edgeworthstown. 'I fancy he has just job-job-jobbed,' she wrote, 'and I don't suppose his hands are very clean, as to public money, road money, etc.' He appears by this time to have fallen out with Nimmo and was waging a 'paper war' in the Galway Advertiser with ALEXANDER NIMMO [2] ALEXANDER NIMMO [2] . Nevertheless he was appointed to this post of county surveyor for Co. Tipperary in May 1834(1) and claimed at the Tipperary Spring Assizes in 1837 that he had done much to prevent the system of jobbing.(2) From 1838 or 1839 onwards his responsibilities were confined to the South Riding only, while HORACE UNIACKE TOWNSEND  HORACE UNIACKE TOWNSEND was placed in charge of the North Riding. Jones remained based in Clonmel until 1852,(3) when he was dismissed. He was succeeded by WILLIAM HENRY DEANE WILLIAM HENRY DEANE . He was a JP for Co. Galway from the 1840s. He died on 24 March 1859 at the age of sixty-two, and was buried in Ardbear graveyard.(4) He married Elizabeth, daughter of John Campbell, a colonel in the Royal Artillery,(5) at Clifden in 1825; she died while their children were still young.

ICEI:  founder member, 1835.(6)
