Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Belfast. Thomas Houston, who was born in Coleraine in 1873, was the youngest son of Thomas G. Houston (1843-1904), for many years headmaster of Coleraine Academical Institution, and his wife Maud, daughter of the Rev. Thomas Millar.(1) Thomas Houston the younger was a pupil at the Institution and then served his articles in the office of YOUNG & YOUNG & amp; MACKENZIE  MACKENZIE in Belfast. After spending 'a considerable time' studying works of architecture in England, he established his own practice in Belfast in 1901,(2) when he became the first tenant of the block of buildings known as Kingscourt at 17 Wellington Place. He remained in the same premises for the rest of his life.

Houston's work included hospitals, churches and commercial premises but he was primarily a domestic architect. Paul Larmour, commenting on a pair of houses in Sans Souci Park, Belfast, which Houston designed in 1901 for Mrs. E.C. Houston, writes: 'This commission appears to mark the start of Houston's very successful career in domestic architecture. For almost four decades he was design many houses in the Malone area, most in an Arts and Crafts manner.'(3) The greater part of these suburban houses were designed for the developer Alexander McDowell.

In his spare time Houston was a keen angler. He was also fond of shooting. He died on 21 October 1938.(4) The practice was carried on by his son, THOMAS TODD HOUSTON THOMAS TODD HOUSTON . Trevor Anthony ('Tony') Houston who also practised in Belfast from the 1940s onwards was not related. Thomas Houston's pupils and assistants included S.S. Fausset, killed in action in 1917,(5) and WILLIAM WYLIE HOUSTON.  WILLIAM WYLIE HOUSTON.
