HOPE, ALAN HODGSON
- Born: 1909 Died: 1965
Architect, of Dublin. Alan Hope was born in Liverpool in 1909 and attended Liverpool University School of Architecture for five years, graduating in 1932.(1) He later described the Liverpool course as he knew it: 'I was trained in the rather rigidly classical school of architecture at Liverpool where we did the orders and the Renaissance and so had an answer to all design…I've no regret having the training I had, though perhaps with a different course I should not have been so long in freeing myself of the incubus of the Renaissance - then the acme of all great architecture. The grand manner of that style or period was well suited to the temperament of an inspiring teacher that Professor Reilly was…but now I realise that the insistence on the special propriety of one period of architecture has a rather stifling effect on one's development.' He had, he recalled, 'scarcely heard of Frank Lloyd Wright' until, at the end of his third year, he spent a few months in the office of Edmund Körner(2) of Essen, who was then building the Ford Motor Company's headquarters at Cologne.(3) In 1931, before he had qualified, he won the competition for designing the Liverpool Sanatorium Hall at Frodsham, Cheshire.(4) After qualifying he came to Ireland where he worked in the offices of VINCENT KELLY and FREDERICK HICKS. (5) From 1934 onwards he was associated with Hicks 'in a pleasant working arrangement which was scarcely a partnership'. Hicks sold the practice to Hope when he retired in 1945.(6)
Hope died suddenly at home on 11 March 1965, and was buried at Deansgrange cemetery.(7). He left an estate valued at £100,184. 18s.(8) He was survived by his widow Mairìn (nee Cuffe), who had graduated from the School of Architecture at University College, Dublin, in 1939(9) and was a sister of LUAN CUFFE . There were children of the marriage. The warm appreciation of Hope by 'A.K.M.' in the Irish Times notes how his uncompromising standards as an architect co-existed with a tolerant and compassionate outlook on life, which manifested itself in his active engagement in social work, and describes his 'quizzical, mischievous sense of humour' and 'vivid, boyish' personality.
In 1986 Mrs Mairìn Hope left a large collection of her husband's drawings, photographs and other material to the Irish Architectural Archive (Acc. 86/127).

All information in this entry not otherwise accounted for is from the short biography of Hope in IB 94, 21 Jun 1952, 634, which is illustrated with a portrait photograph. After Hope's death two 'appreciations' appeared in the Irish Times, one by N[iall?] M[ontgomery?], which was reprinted in JRIAI (1966), 52-3, the other by 'A.K.M.' The photograph of Hope in IB 94, mentioned above, also appears in AAI Green Book (1954), 21. Another photograph of Hope is in the Irish Times, 2 Jun 1961.
