Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and artist, for whom see Howard Colvin, A Biographical dictionary of British architects 1600-1840 (3rd edn., 1995), 726-727. James Paine, the only son of JAMES PAINE [1] JAMES PAINE [1] , exhibited a design for a new stone bridge across the River Foyle at Derry at the Royal Academy in 1788 (no. 459).  An engraving of the proposed bridge - a perspective view - was dedicated by Paine to the Earl of Charlemont;  according to  to the inscription on the engraving Paine had prepared a full set of drawings,an estimate and structural data at the request of the Irish Society and delivered them to the Society at the beginning of 1786, adding that he had been informed that 'in lieu of a permanent building, a work entirely of timber has taken place'.
