Sculptor, of Rome and Dublin. John Hogan, the son of a builder in Tallow, Co. Waterford, was born on 14 October 1800. His parents' intention was that he should become a lawyer, but after an uncongenial period in the office of a Cork attorney, he entered the office of THOMAS DEANE THOMAS DEANE as an apprentice in 1818. It was Deane who from 1819 encouraged Hogan to carve in wood and stone, and, after his apprenticeship ended in March 1820, Hogan devoted himself entirely to sculpture. He worked in Rome from 1824 until 1849. During this period he made five visits to Ireland, in 1829, 1832, 1840, 1843 and 1846. He returned to Ireland permanently with his Italian wife and six children in the late summer of 1849. He died in Dublin on 27 March 1858 and was buried in Glasnevin cemetery. A full account of Hogan's life and works, with a catalogue raisonée and bibliography, is given by John Turpin in John Hogan: Irish Neoclassical Sculptor in Rome (Irish Academic Press, 1982). there is also a brief memoir in DB 1, 1 April 1859, 40. See also Paula Murphy, Nineteenth-Century Irish Sculpture: Native Genius Reaffirmed (Yale University Press: New Haven & London, 2010), 61-69. JAMES CAHILL JAMES CAHILL was his assistant in the period before his death. He was the father of JOHN VALENTINE HOGAN. JOHN VALENTINE HOGAN.
