Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Cork. William Henry Hill, son of the architect WILLIAM HILL  WILLIAM HILL of Cork, was born on 6 November 1837. He was educated at Hamblin and Porter's School, Cork, before being articled to his uncle, HENRY HILL HENRY HILL , from 1853 until 1859.(1) In the latter year he was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Engineering from Queen's College, Cork, and the Royal University. He spent eighteen months as a draughtsman with the Board of Public Works in Dublin before being appointed inspecting architect for the Dioceses of Down, Connor & Dromore under the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1860. He was almost immediately(2) promoted to the southern district and held the latter post until the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland in 1870, when he set up in private practice in Cork. In addition to his privately commissioned work, he was diocesan architect for the Dioceses of Cork, Cloyne and Ross from 1872(3) until circa 1878, when he was succeeded by ROBERT FOGERTY ROBERT FOGERTY , and consulting architect to the Cork Lunatic Asylum Board for nearly forty years. In 1894 he was asked to report on the condition of the Cork Municipal Buildings.(4) On the foundation of the National University of Ireland, he was appointed to the governing body of University College, Cork. In Dublin he acted as assessor of Rathmines Artisans' Dwellings competition in 1900.(5)

Hill died suddenly on 28 July 1911,(6) leaving a personal estate valued at £12,727.(7) There is a mural tablet to his memory in St Luke's church, Summerhill, Cork, where he worshipped and which he restored after a fire in 1887. He had married, on 23 June 1863, Marian, daughter of W.J. Tomkins, by whom he had four sons and seven daughters. His eldest son, WILLIAM HENRY HILL [2]  WILLIAM HENRY HILL [2] joined him in his practice in 1899.(8) One of his daughters, Glendoline, married JAMES PARSONS BURKITT. JAMES PARSONS BURKITT.

A set of five drawings by Hill for the restoration of the church of St Multose, Kinsale, Co. Cork, 1894, are in the Irish Architectural Archive, Acc. 98/88. Xerox copies of material relating to W.H. Hill in the possesion of Colin Hill, Princeton, NJ, in 1992 were presented to the Archive by Gerard Kennedy in 2002 (Acc. 2000/58).
