Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Cork. Henry Houghton Hill, the elder of the two sons of ARTHUR HILL ARTHUR HILL , was born in Cork in 1882. He attended the Merchant Taylors' School at Crosby, Liverpool, and then, after working in his father's office, entered Liverpool University School of Architecture, where he was the first student to be awarded the new degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Architecture in 1905.(1). While he was at Liverpool, he made measured drawings of the Custom House in Dublin, which were selected for inclusion in the two-volume Portfolio of Measured Drawings published by Liverpool University in 1906-8 under the auspices of Professor C.H. Reilly.(2) From 1907 until 1910 Hill was a student at the Royal Academy Schools in London.(3) In 1909 he was awarded the RIBA's Silver Medal and £25 guineas for his essay, 'The Influence on Architecture of Modern Methods of Construction',(4) having already been awarded a certificate of honourable mention for his essay submitted the previous year.(5)

In 1909(6) Hill entered into partnership with his father at 22 George's Street, Cork, the practice being known as Arthur & Henry H. Hill. His career was interrupted by the First World War, when he held a commission in the Royal Engineers.(7) His father remained active in the partnership until he suffered a stroke in 1917. Like his father, Hill was a lecturer on architecture at University College, Cork,(8) and also gave lectures to a variety of other audiences on architectural subjects.(9) Articles by him appear in the Irish Builder, the Journal of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland and the Journal of the Cork Historical and Archaeological Society.

Hill died after a short illness on 9 February 1951 at the age of sixty-nine, eulogised in  his obituary in the Irish Builder as 'perhaps the most distinguished of a family group of architects who combined technical integrity and infallible artistic tase with debonair grace in social relationships.' He was married to Elsie Stoker of Cork, by whom he had a daughter, Myrtle.(10) His principal assistant Desmond V. Stevenson remained in charge of the practice until it was sold by his executors. Other pupils and assitants included B.R. Johnson.
