Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. John Joseph Higginbotham was born in Dalkey in 1875, the son of Christopher Higginbotham, a building contractor in Dalkey. He was educated at the Christian Brothers' School, Dun Laoghaire, and at St Vincent's College, Castleknock.  From November 1890 until November 1893 he was a pupil of JOHN JOSEPH O'CALLAGHAN  JOHN JOSEPH O'CALLAGHAN and then worked as an assistant in O'Callaghan's office at least until the end of 1898.(1)   In 1904 he was elected from a total of eleven candidates to the post of building surveyor for the City of Dublin,(2) later rising to the position of Senior Building Surveyor and Surveyor of Places of Public Resort. He retired in 1943 and died on 9 January 1951. At the time of the 1911 census he had been married to his wife, Lily, for twelve years and had five children.   CECIL FRANCIS HIGGINBOTHAM  CECIL FRANCIS HIGGINBOTHAM was one of his sons;  another son, Clement W. Higginbotham, was an architect in the Office of Public Works.
