According to his obituary in the Irish Builder, Robert Hobart was born in Dublin in 1831 and was a graduate of Trinity College Dublin(1) and of the Royal Hibernian Academy Schools. After working for some years in a Dublin office he went to London and in 1869 joined the staff of The Architect. He remained with the journal, of which he became editor, until his death in 1908.

All information in this entry is from the brief obituary of Hobart in IB 50, 26 Dec 1908, 789 (another in Freeman's Journal, 19 Dec 1858).

(1) G.D. Burtchaell & T.U. Sadleir, eds., Alumni Dublinenses (1935), supplement, 56, records a Robert Hobart who was admitted a pensioner on 24 Jun 1859 but gives no other particulars. He was possibly a son of the barrister Robert Hobart, of William Street and, later, Mountjoy Square.
