HENRY, HUGH *

Hugh Henry worked as a carpenter for James Gandon on the construction of the Custom House. In 1781 Gandon, who had requested that his 'principal artificers' should be 'persons of some property, of known integrity and knowledge in their professions, and not given to litigation', appointed HENRY DARLEY  HENRY DARLEY as stonecutter, JOHN SEMPLE[1]  JOHN SEMPLE[1] as bricklayer, and Hugh Henry as carpenter, 'persons whose abilitites were equal to any other of their respective trades'.(1) Semple and Henry also worked for WILLIAM CHAMBERS  WILLIAM CHAMBERS on the construction of the Theatre and Chapel at Trinity College.(2) Henry was assisted by WILLIAM SEMPLE WILLIAM SEMPLE , who took over his work as his health began to fail.(3) A last payment was made to him in August 1791. His will had been proved by November 1792. A Jane Henry - probably his widow - was his executrix.(4)

The name Hugh Henry occurs in the register of the parish of St Thomas, Dublin, between 1756 and 1769 as that of the father of two sons and three daughters christened in this period. The daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth Henry was christened on 9 May 1756; subsequent references are to the christenings of four children of Hugh and Jane Henry, of Henry Street (1765-66), of Mecklenburg Street (1767), of Jervas Quay (1768) and of Abbey Street (1769).

'Mr Hugh Henry was a subscriber to Thomas Malton's, The Seats and Demesnes of the nobility and gentry of Ireland (Dublin, 1783-1794).
