HAYES, JAMES GORDON LENNOX

Civil engineer. James Hayes was probably born in Worcester circa 1878.(1) From 1894 to 1897 he was apprenticed to the city engineer for Worcester, Thomas Caird. For the next five years he worked in England, first as an assistant Edward Willcox of London and Birmingham, then on his own account in Worcester, and then as chief assistant to H.C. Werner of Westminster and Ems, Germany. He came to Ireland in 1902 to take up the post of chief assistant to JOHN HARRIS HAZLETT SWINEY of Belfast, and was in was in charge of the Buncrana main drainage scheme in 1905.(2) He may have left Ireland circa 1911 when he ceased to be a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers of Ireland.
